UDIN (Unique Document Identification Number)

UDIN (Unique Document Identification Number) is a digital platform used by the Government of West Bengal to assign secure and verifiable IDs to official documents. When we inherited the project the system was already live but struggling with scale, performance and future proofing. Our mission was to preserve the core idea while completely transforming its foundation.

UDIN provides a unique and tamper proof identifier to every attested document enabling instant verification by citizens, institutions and government departments. As demand grew the original system began to experience slow response times, increased errors and difficulties with updates often risking system wide failures.

We re-imagined UDIN from the ground up. Rather than patching up the old system we redesigned it as a set of independent services: document generation, verification, audit logging, notifications and integrations. Each service has its own clear ownership making it easier to scale, maintain and evolve over time.

Today UDIN can handle higher traffic volumes, integrate seamlessly with other government portals and is equipped to support future schemes and applications. It’s not just a platform, it’s a robust foundation for digital governance.

Our Approach

We began by conducting a comprehensive technical audit to understand how different departments were using UDIN and identifying pain points. This involved pinpointing performance bottlenecks, removing heavy synchronous tasks and decoupling tightly linked functionalities.

Next, we implemented microservices, breaking down the monolithic architecture into domain driven services. By introducing asynchronous processing and queue based workloads we ensured that traffic spikes no longer led to slowdowns or failures.

Security, scalability and observability were built into the system from day one. We introduced centralized logging, real time dashboards and proactive alerts ensuring stakeholders have full visibility into the system’s performance. Automated CI/CD pipelines enable quick deployments without disrupting service.

The Result

What we delivered is a scalable, resilient platform that performs reliably under government scale workloads. UDIN now handles far more traffic, integrates seamlessly with external systems and gives key stakeholders transparency and control over the platform’s performance.

Most importantly, UDIN is now a long term digital asset for the state. It is ready for new applications and services while remaining stable and secure for the citizens and institutions that rely on it every day.
